The two mentioned villages are in the old Zemplen / Zemplin county and in Slovak Republic.

Both of the villages were incorporated into the town of
Humenne. The name MARCINKO does list in Humenne's phone book but ORAC'KO lists mostly in Spis region in Holumnica, Poprad,Strane pod Tatrami and more.

You need a precise place of birth in "Spisska Magura" which would suggest the Spis region of Slovak Republic.
Surname MARCINKO does show up in area code 052 and 053 which would cover the Spis region.

Saw the post about relative of Pal marczinko born in Kudlovce.
I have info of a Pal Marczinko who died 1830 in Kudlovce. He was married to Maria Csisamar.
They had two children Pal born Dec. 16th. 1873 and Jan born May 13th 1871 in Kudlovce and died in Illinois.
If Dick would like to get in contact with me he can email me at wagenfour -a-t- aol.com -d-o-t- I have done extensive research on Kudlovce and perhaps can help him with info on his name.
I also have a picture of Kudlovce of the homes there that someone took for me while visiting there.

Ray: Bio of Richard "Demo Dick" Marcinko
My grandparents came from Galacia, Austria and immigrated to Centralia, Pennsylvania. Today I was reading the newspaper and the front page story (Florida Today) was about Richard "Demo Dick" Marcinko who created the elite Navy SEAL Team Six which is the group that killed Osama bin Laden. His background is further detailed at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Marcinko.
The article in the newspaper said that "Marcinko spent much of his childhood in the coal mining region of Pennsylvania, one of several areas the SEAL teams have traditionally drawn from." Of corse he was born in Lansford, Pennsylvania a few miles from Centralia. We are extremely proud of him.

mmaskaly: Re: Maszkaly & Village Uhe'n
The family surname was Mazkaly (Gyori and Maria) The village of Uhen his shown on Gyori's United States petition for citizenship. The village is listed as the birthplace of Maria (his wife) and Mariska (his daughter). Mariska was born ~1885-1886. Gyori immigrated to the US from his last listed village of Nghily (which we believe to be present day Michalovce). I have taken all Ellis Island Maskaly immigrant home villages and plotted those on an old Ziemplein County Map. Most are immediately (within 10 km) of Michalovce or up the Laborec River Valley.

Other information using Gyori’s Declaration of Intent and Petition of Intent and the LDS Microfilms, we located the village he was born in via the Hungarian Magyar Census of 1869.
LDS Film# 0722715 Page 79)

The village is Klecsenow, Slovakia. It is approximately 8 km South East of Michalovce.
(variation Kelecsen’y)

In the Hungarian census Gyori’s parents and brothers & sisters are listed:

Father: Janos Maszkaly Born 1812
Mother: Ezesa Finyar Born 1819

Sister: Anna Maszkaly Born 1849 (Married to Mihaly Lsernyer (born 1844)
Brother: Mihaly Maszkaly Born 1853
Gyori Maszkaly Born 1857
>Brother: Amra Maszkaly Born 1860
>Sister: Maria Maszkaly Born 1862
>Twin Brothers:
> Mihaly Maszkaly Born 1868
> Js?oan Born 1868

I explored your site and found in the Industrial Database, 1 reference to the village of Uhe'n.

As for the surnames, my grandparents entry paperwork show Maszkaly initially, but was immediately changed to Maskaly. I have found 2 other families in the US who did similar name changes. 1 family with 3 brothers came from Ushord in the early 1900s, and another family came from the Hrabovcik area, but I have no documents from either of these 2 family lines.

Another US Maskaly family had their surname listed as Maskal when they came in the US. We also suspect that Maszke'ly is the same surname.

Any help or direction would be appreciated.

Thanks

Mike and Pauline Maskaly

Thank you. You have done some research.

Gyori is Gyorgy
Lsernyer has to be CSERNYER
Ezesa - Erzsa aka Erzsebet
Amra is Anna
Js?oan Johan or Janos for John

Since you have his Declaration of Intent and Petition were you able to find his arrival manifest to match up to the document? It was most likely an office clerk that filled out the information and your ancestor only signed it.

I agree Nghily sounds like Nagymihaly now Michalovce.
Michalovce, Slovakia
1773 Nagy-Mihály, Mihalowcze, 1786 Nagy-S[ent]-Mihály, Mihalowce, Nagy-Mihály, 1808 Nagy-Mihály, Groß-Michl, Michalany, Michalowce, 1863–1913 Nagymihály, 1920 Michaľovce, 1927– Michalovce [all the names this town was known by]

Could "Uhen" be in some weird way an

Hrabovčík

I am sure you know that MASZKALY in Hungarian is MASKAL^ in Slovak. MASZKELY or MASKEL is transcribing error.
Surname MASKAL^ in 1995 in Slovakia in these locations:
http://slovniky.korpus.sk/?w=maskal&s=exact&c=Mcab&d=kssj4&d=psp&d=scs&d=sss&d=peciar&d=ma&d=hssjV&d=obce&d=priezviska&d=un&d=locutio&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

Yes, I have his & later his wife's and daugther's arrival manifest. (They only show Hungary as their departure point). All the other information came from his petition for citizenship and theMagyar census.

As for Uhen, I found this listing on a branch from this web site:
http://www.radixindex.com/placeindex/placeindex_uh.shtml.

Typing Uhen I got the following hit.

"RadixIndex : Hungarian genealogy and local history databases

Uh

Please note: Place names are not controlled and consolidated, one settlement can be listed with different names.

Uhén (1), Uhersky-Brod (1), Uhliszka (1), Uhorna (2), Uhorszka (22), Úhpest (1), Uhrfahr (1).

As you can see there is 1 reference in a tradesman database.

Thank you. Care you share the location of the manifest of your family? Did they arrive Ellis Island or other port?

I did not find it anywhere in old Hungary using
http://www.radixindex.com/cgi-bin/hn1913.cgi?place=uhen

I suppose they arrived around 1892 or earlier if no mention of a place of birth or last residence.

Since you have found the family in the 1869 census why still look for Uhen? I have seen some wonderful spelling of a Slavic locations on US document and possible this is among one of them.

mmaskaly: Re: Maszkaly & Village Uhe'n
Hi Zlatica,

I have attached the Petition and Declaration of Intention to become a US citizen.

I am following up on Uhen as it appears that is where Gyori started his family. This is an assumption but his wife & daughter are listed as being born in the same town.

Going up the Laborec River Valley, I found 2 towns that might be prounced in Slovakian to sound as Uhen to an english speaker. The first being Humenne' and the second being Pavolovce nad Uhomi. Could either be a candiate for the village listed as Uhen?

A specific reference to a settlement of Uhe'n is found in
RadixIndex : Hungarian genealogy and local history
databases.

"The source of data is a book published in 1892. Here is its complete bibliographical description:
Magyarország iparosainak és kereskedőinek czím- es lakjegyzéke / ... szerk. Jekelfalussy József. - Budapest : Pesti Könyvnyomda Részvény-Társaság, [1892]. - LXVI, [2], 2435 p.
English translation of these words is: Directory of craftsmen and merchants in Hungary / ... ed. by József Jekelfalussy. - Budapest : Pesti Könyvnyomda Részvény-Társaság, [1892]. - lxvi, [2], 2435 p. "

Lastly I found a village in the same vicenity
named Mas'kovce. Do you think it relates to the surname or just coincidence?

Thanks

Mike

On the Declaration of Intention his place of birth is Klecsenow, Zemlen/Zemplen county and his last foreign residence was Ujhely, Hungary.
Ujhely could be Satoraljaujhely, Zemplen megye, Hungary.
In the phone book of Satoraljaujhely a 2 listings for MASZKALY

I think one clerk could not read the other clerk's handwriting and instead of Ujhely wrote Uhen.

mmaskaly: Re: Ujhely, Klecsenow
We have just returned from Slovakia & Hungary and you were correct in the village identificiation. We found distant family members in Petrez nad laborcom. One of which has a contact in the State Archives. They located the only records remaining in Kosice. Review of the records found all the family members we knew of, plus more. We actually got a certified birth certificate for Gyori.

Trying to go back & find records for his father will likely be unsucessful as only birth records exist in the archives.

We tried the Archives in Uhely, but they were closed the day we were there. I am thinking the entire family group moved there immediately after the 1869 census as there are no further records of them from 1869 to 1901.

Records in Uhely may be the only clues left, to go any further back.

Ideas?

Thanks

Mike

You're welcome Mike.
Husband and I were in Petrovce nad Laborcom last summer visiting family.
Do check LDS-Mormons site for Ujhely's church records. Nothing in Presov's archive?
